Who is MWS?

It has been over 80 years since Motor Wheel Service And Repair Co was founded and nearly 20 years since we moved from our home in Jeddo Road, Shepherds Bush, West London to our current HQ in Berkshire.

During this time a lot has changed around us, but two things still remain the same at MWS:

  1. our promise of quality expressed through our products
  2. our guarantee to keep classic cars on the road for as long as possible by supplying them with the finest wheels

Recent years have seen the value of classic cars soar through the roof with many `60s classics attracting six figure sums at auction.  With these sorts of values being achieved on regular occasions it comes as no surprise that we have been quite busy in all our endeavors.  We are somewhat proud of being able to claim that we can restore almost any wire wheel to its original spec with the various services on offer via our unique in-house workshop.  Each individual component that goes into our wheels is quality checked and the finished article is often something to be in awe of.  Combining 80 years of know-how and modern painting techniques we have been given the opportunity to embellish some of the finest cars in motoring history with new wheels.  Generally the work that we undertake in our workshop is for pre-war cars and we are regularly working on Bentley, Bugatti and Rolls Royce wheels, taking them back to their former glory.

Our 80+ years in the business have also allowed us to mass produce a huge range of wheels for off the shelf purchases that revolve mainly around classic cars such as MGs and Jaguars.  The iconic E-type is one such car that we are always pleased to see roll into our fitting bay, whether it be for new wheels or a fresh set of tyres.  Our expert fitters have been extensively trained to balance wire wheels correctly.  There are not a lot of garages around which are still able to balance wire wheels correctly, and it is an all too familiar problem amongst classic car owners, the dreaded vibration at 50 MPH.  Thankfully we have retained our knowledge over the years and are able to eradicate this problem in one quick visit.

Over the years MWS has introduced a bolt-on range which allows us to fit wire wheels onto modern classics such as the Jaguar S-type, XK8, Mazda MX5 and various kit cars.  Photos of these cars can be found on our website under the section Gallery.  It is worth noting that we also offer a bolt-on application for the Triumph Vitesse, Herald, Spitfire and GT6, thus avoiding the necessity of converting the car to centre-lock.

Something which can come as a surprise to some of our customers is that we have made a lot of our wheels tubeless, taking away the necessity of rim bands and tubes.  We have achieved this via years of innovation and accomplished craftsmanship.

MWS recently acquired a mobile fitting and balancing unit which we take along to various car meetings throughout the year.  We are now regularly attending various VSCC events with plenty of Blockley tyres in tow which demonstrate that period block pattern so well.  However, it is not just their appearance which excites our customers so much it is of course their overall performance.  You can have the fastest car in the world but if it has not been fitted with the finest rubber - it will not perform at its optimum level.

Recent months has seen England’s pleasant land blessed with some great weather and this of course results in people opening the garage doors to fire up their pride and joy for a quick run out.  Just last month we had a rather fabulous Bentley from 1923 visit our premises which we bedecked with new Blockleys.  The car having been a recent convert to Blockley tyres was driving smoothly and performed rather well at a prestigious annual rally having covered over 4000 miles.

Earlier on in the year we attended the Beaulieu Autojumble, a huge event aimed specifically at people who are after parts for either their restoration projects or updating their current vehicles.  The show proved a success for us and the majority of our staff had a good day too.  Beaulieu also houses the National Motor Museum which I am sure was an additional bonus to those who attended.  Those who missed this event can breathe a sigh of relief as you will be able relive the excitement in September when the international event will take place.

Another exciting prospect on the cards at MWS is the introduction of the Blockley radials; these will be available in the 185VR15, 185VR16 and 205/70VR15 series.  If their vintage crossply predecessors are anything to go by, then classic car owners are in for something special indeed.

Happy Motoring!!
